Universal Design Studio & J&M Davidson, London
Universal Design Studio is an award winning architecture and interior design practice based in London. Founded in 2001 by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, in response to the growing demand for their distinctive design aesthetic and clever use of material details in an architectural and interior design context. The studio is co-directed by Hannah Carter Owers and Jason Holley.
The studio works internationally on commissions including boutique hotels and restaurants, retail spaces, galleries and renowned cultural institutions. Universals most recent commission has been the new Flagship J&M Davidson store on Mount Street, London.
This beautiful new new flagship store has formed the third stand-alone location for the brand, with existing stores in Aoyama, Tokyo and another on Golborne Road in Notting Hill, London.
Part of a Grade II listed building on the border of Carlos Place, the small but charming boutique sits proudly across from the Connaught Hotel on one of the most iconic shopping streets in London.
The store’s clean lines and calming neutral tones of dusty taupes and soft pinks serve as a haven for Mayfair shoppers to peruse the newest collections of bags, accessories and ready to wear pieces. Mount Street, known for its deep red terracotta period buildings, is brought inside with this blush tonality whilst opening up the space with uncovered windows and translucent mirrored panels.
The focal point of the store is the impressive, cantilevered staircase below in solid terrazzo marble with a leather-wrapped handrail inviting guests to discover the lower floor. The terrazzo flooring continues throughout the store paired with bespoke cast glass plinths and heavy concrete counter tops. Luxurious fabrics and soft edges of carefully selected vintage furniture pieces, in collaboration with Nicholas Chandor.
“We were keen that the space had a strong dialogue with its place whilst reflecting the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship, quality and attention to detail, expressing the timeless and understated nature of the brand.” Jason Holley, Director of Universal Design Studio.
