Gardenias by Jamie Hayon for BD Barcelona
All of Hayon’s collections, regardless of which brand have commissioned him, hold a remarkable signature style. These unmistakable subtle, svelte forms, curves and smooth lines are the notable pointers when recognising a Hayon piece. A brief heads up about one of my favourite designers today. Jamie Hayon was born in Madrid in 1974, he’s been included as one of the most relevant designer/creators of our time & Wallpaper* have listed him as one of the most influential creators of our last decade. With offices in Italy, Spain & the UK. He has designed collections for Baccarat, Fritz Hansen, Ceccoti Collezioni, Sé, Magis, Lladró & Established & Sons. He has designed the very beautiful La Terraza del Casino restaurant in Madrid, & most recently Le Sergent Recruteur in Paris. He was also inlisted by the footwear brand Camper, to design the stores worldwide.
BD Barcelona are a Spanish manufacturing company (I went to their amazing studios last Autumn) who produce collections for designers such as Doshi Levien, Konstantin Grcic, Ross Lovegrove & Neri & Hu. They also have the manufacturing rights for designs by Salvador Dali & Antoni Gaudi. Last week, BD Barcelona dedicated the front of their stand in Milan to Hayon’s new collection for the brand, in collaboration with Alesta. The collection is titled ‘Gardenias’, a new collection of garden furniture. The collection was beautiful in the flesh, a totally new series of furniture so unique on the market today. In a world of square shaped aluminium and canvas outdoor furniture, Gardenias hits the sport for the more adventurous purchaser. Another unmistakable collection by Hayon.
The collaboration with Alesta is an interesting one. This company make high quality paint with a difference. It features a thermosetting powder, the don’t contain solvents or lead which diminishes their environmental impact. The paints are resistant to the elements, really quite important in the outdoor furniture world. With a complete range of RAL colours, Hayon found a really good partnership here. Also you know when you sit on outdoor furniture in the heat, and your chair is boiling, this paint has agents that reduce the surface temperature up to 20 degrees.
On to his beautiful fine terracotta vases. From his original sketches, prototypes are handmade & by a process of elimination it becomes clear to him which eight designs are put into production. Every one is hand made, & carried to the oven for firing.
