A very unexpected find one late night in Paris recently. On rue Froissart & looking for shelter from the hideous winter weather Beaucoup offered a perfect environment to be fed & watered. With some exceptional design pieces by Finn Juhl for One Collection & dining chairs by Hans J. Wegner, I shall always admire a restaurant who are committed to purchasing authentic designs and not imitations or fakes of design classics as these pieces are. I visited during the week of both Maison et Objet & Mens Fashion Week, so as you can imagine, a new restaurant such as Beaucoup was sure to attract a cosmopolitan clientele.
Although this vast interior space complete with giant loft like windows initially emulates a New York vibe, the space to me feels more nordic, perhaps because of the choice of furniture. Danish design classics are of course going to trick your mind into thinking you’re in Copenhagen. With large blackboards as menus, and an open kitchen to the back of the space, Beaucoup (simply meaning ‘alot’ in French) offers a relaxed environment, but being Paris, of course no one would blink an eye-lid if you wanted to dress up to the nines.
This is ‘The Chair’, as the Americans called it, & is the most famous of Hans J. Wegner’s many chair designs and contributed greatly to the international breakthrough by Danish design in the 50s. Interestingly, when John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon met in the first ever televised election debate in 1960, they sat in The Chair, & again recently President Obama was photographed using the chair during a debate. It was chosen for its exceptional comfort and is made from the most carefully selected oak and has a woven fabric seat. It is available for purchase in a variety of finishes from Discover&Deliver.
Beat Light Fat by Tom Dixon can now be found in hundreds of hotel, restaurants and bars worldwide, from Beaucoup here in Paris, Mama Shelter Hotel, The Sanderson Hotel in London, W Spa in Puerto Rico & The Smyth Penthouse in New York. Another pieces available for purchase via Discover&Deliver.
