LWSY DESIGN // Softroom give us the lounge we need at Paris Gare du Nord

Gare du Nord, my most loved and hated station in the world. Loved when I am arriving from London (this meant being reunited with my love for a weekend when we were living in different countries) and hated when I had to leave. Take the metro to Gare du Nord and you find yourself exiting the station in an incomprehensible maze of exits and barriers. Take an Uber, and I find myself running to the express lift of the Eurostar check-in. The station is not the welcome or goodbye Paris should be presenting to their visitors, but vast plans for this to change are already beginning to be visible.

Eurostar have recently eased life at Gare du Nord for us frequent travellers with the lure of their new Softroom designed Business Premier Lounge. Positioned at the baggage control exit next to the Business express queue, whisk yourself in the lift up to the Parisian apartment style lounge.

Situated on the top floor of the original 19th century building, featuring high ceilings, marble fireplaces, a cocktail bar with a cocktail list designed by London Cocktail Club, there are intimate snug spaces the length of the lounge, recognising the importance of quiet spaces and the need for a quick re-charge before travelling, whether that’s you or your device.

The space was designed and executed by Softroom, and the furniture and lighting is authentic (a huge bone of contention for me when visiting new design locations is seeing fake design). French brand les deun luminaires created a signature design for one of the salons, the side lamps below are by Michael Anastassaides for Flos, with other pieces by Gubi, Vitra, Arflex and Moroso.

“Moving the Business Premier lounge to a new location within Paris Gare du Nord has enabled us to transform the travellers journey. Set in the top floor of the station, we’ve re-imagined the striking architecture of the original building, and created a series of different spaces to suit all occasions. From the light-filled working area, to the relaxing cocktail bar, the lounge offers a flexible environment to suit all needs.”

Christopher Bagot, Director, Softroom

“The opening of the new business lounge in Paris is part of a wide-reaching programme of investment in our stations and our service. With its elegant design, calm environment and digital connectivity, the lounge will provide an unrivalled level of style and comfort for our business customers.”

Nicolas Petrovic, Chief Executive, Eurostar

The lounge is accessible to Carte Blanche card holders (or equivalent) & Business Premier travellers.
